The Phantom Empire (DVD)     $15.00
Mascot's PHANTOM EMPIRE, billed as the first "Musical Western," was singer Gene Autry's initial starring role. Comprised of equal parts of song, saddle, and subterranean shenanigans, it hit the jackpot at the box offices across the country in the mid '30's. In fact, it was still playing the "grind houses" more than half a decade after its inital release, though most often in its guise as a feature picture, under the alter-ego title-- RADIO RANCH.

Autry and his young friends (juvenile actors Frankie Darro and real like championship rodeo rider Betsy King Ross) find themselves up against evil scientist and super-scientific underground world, Murania, complete with robots, death rays, and other sci-fi creations. Science-fiction, country music and the elements of pure Western are combined into a classic picture that was fully twenty-five years ahead of it's time.

Production note: It was reported that the idea for this incredible story was dreamed up by Wallace MacDonald while under the influence of an anesthetic in his dentist's office!

Superman the Serial (VHS)     $19.98
This looks like a job for Superman!

Follow the defender of 'Truth, Justice, and the American Way' from infancy on the doomed planet Krypton to adulthood in Metropolis battling the sinister Spider Lady (Carol Forman). She's plotting to unleash a weapon of long-distance destruction; the relativity reducer ray. Unintentionally helping this diabolical plot by keeping Superman (Kirk Alyn) busy with rescues are nosy Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Noel Neill, who recreted her role in the subsequenet 1950s TV series), cub newshound Jimmy Olsen (Tommy Bond) and editor Perry White (Pierre Watkin).

The flying sequences are a must-see, with live action giving way to animation that was state-of-the-art for the time and, though simplistic by today's standards, heightens the enjoyment because it empowers Superman to accomplish feats never duplicated since on the live-action screen. Add the delight of the cars and clothes and gee-whiz innocence of the era and get set for surefire fun. Take Superman "up, up and away" home for entertainment that soars.

Two tape set.
