Mascot's PHANTOM EMPIRE, billed as the first "Musical Western," was singer Gene Autry's initial starring role. Comprised of equal parts of song, saddle, and subterranean shenanigans, it hit the jackpot at the box offices across the country in the mid '30's. In fact, it was still playing the "grind houses" more than half a decade after its inital release, though most often in its guise as a feature picture, under the alter-ego title-- RADIO RANCH.
Autry and his young friends (juvenile actors Frankie Darro and real like championship rodeo rider Betsy King Ross) find themselves up against evil scientist and super-scientific underground world, Murania, complete with robots, death rays, and other sci-fi creations. Science-fiction, country music and the elements of pure Western are combined into a classic picture that was fully twenty-five years ahead of it's time.
Production note: It was reported that the idea for this incredible story was dreamed up by Wallace MacDonald while under the influence of an anesthetic in his dentist's office!
12 chapters on two DVDs for one great price!
